Fort Myers

The history of Fort Myers largely began in response to conflict within the nation during the 1800s. In the 1830s, US government built a series of forts along the Caloosahatchee River, giving them strategic access during the American Indian and Seminole Wars. These forts were called “Fort Myers” after Colonel Abraham Myers. Later, the area was considered a Confederate territory during the Civil War. After the war, it was ultimately founded by Captain Manual Gonzalez in 1866. Along with Joseph and Christina Vivas, Gonzalez setup the first trading post in Fort Myers, which ultimately started the community. Hamilton Diston, a wealthy businessman from Philadelphia, had plans to connect the Caloosahatchee River and Lake Okeechobee, allowing steamboats run between the lake and the Gulf of Mexico. The town of Fort Myers was incorporated in 1885. As the 19th century came to a close, Fort Myers began to attract new visitors as well as land developers, eager build and sell homes. Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, bought several plots of land to build his winter retreat, which included a laboratory. It was at his lodge that Edison discovered a key component needed to create rubber, thus allowing the US to make rubber, rather rely on foreign sources. Later, area attracted other well-known people, such as Henry Fort, Harvey Firestone.

Increased access to Fort Myers fueled its continued growth. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was extended, connecting Fort Myers to Punta Gorda, as well as the Edison Bridge, constructed between 1924 and 1931, brought more visitors and new residents to the area, creating a land boom.

The city has a population of 77,146 and is ethnically diverse with 47.8% white, 21.4% Hispanic, and 27.2% African American. The greater Fort Myers area is family-friendly, with many residential neighborhoods, schools, and parks. Fort Myers has an active business community and the River District is lined with historic buildings from the early 1900’s, transforming the area by offering modern day restaurants, shops, and a cultural arts center.
