The history of Fort Myers largely began in response to conflict within the nation during the 1800s. In the 1830s, US government built a series of forts along the Caloosahatchee River, giving them strategic access during the American Indian and Seminole Wars. These forts were called “Fort Myers” after Colonel Abraham Myers. Later, the area was considered a Confederate territory during the Civil War.
